Book Art

After being introduced to the concept of book art during an artists’ group meeting it was suggested that each member create a piece of book art. Using her preferred medium of clay and together with her keen interest in the natural world  she designed and created ‘The Monarch’. This work involved those techniques of slip decoration and burnishing as used in her pottery. Decorated clay tiles comprise the covers of the book within which a poem, written by Ross Gardner, is read in such a way as to mimic the flight of the butterfly.

Since then her curiosity in book art grew as well as her skills in bookbinding and printmaking. With a common interest in storytelling and artists’ books Lola and five other artists set up ‘artbookart’. They meet regularly to share various skills and experiences, with the aim of facilitating mutual support in their practice. They have exhibited both as a group and independently, as well as having organised several Artist Book Fairs.
